## What it is

Lasso guard wraps the guard player's leg around an opponent's controlled arm, usually from spider guard. The loop makes it difficult for the passer to retract the arm and provides a strong connection between the guard player's hip and the opponent's shoulder.

Shallow and deep lasso variations solve different problems. A shallow lasso is mobile and defensive; a deep lasso creates stronger rotational control but requires careful knee positioning and awareness of stacking pressure.

## Key principles

- Keep the sleeve grip connected to the leg loop.
- Point the lasso knee in a safe, mobile direction.
- Use the free leg to manage the passer's hip or far arm.
- Convert the lasso into an off-balance rather than holding indefinitely.

## Common entries

- **Spider guard:** Circle one foot around the controlled arm while maintaining sleeve tension.
- **Seated sleeve guard:** Create a foot frame and thread the lasso as the passer reaches.
- **Retention:** Loop the arm when a passer begins to circle outside the legs.

## Productive next actions

- **Lasso sweep:** Pull the trapped shoulder forward while blocking the opponent's base.
- **Omoplata:** Extend and rotate around the arm already connected to the leg.
- **Back exposure:** Use the lasso to turn the shoulders while moving around the far hip.

## Defensive priorities

- **Posture and sleeve recovery:** Shorten the trapped arm and remove the sleeve grip before circling out.
- **Knee-line awareness:** Avoid forcing the guard player's knee inward while the foot is fixed.
- **Control the free leg:** Prevent the second leg from managing distance while working to unwind the loop.
