## What it is

K guard uses a high inside leg frame and close hip connection to reach beneath the opponent's far-side base. It can appear from supine open guard, closed guard, or as a reaction to an opponent stepping close.

The position is especially influential in modern no-gi leg-lock systems, but it also supports gi sweeps and back exposures. The guard player must manage distance carefully: too far away loses the hip wedge, while collapsing under uncontrolled weight can compromise alignment.

## Key principles

- Build a strong wedge at the near hip before reaching for the far leg.
- Keep your own knee line aligned and mobile.
- Control the far leg at the knee or ankle rather than reaching without connection.
- Off-balance first; enter the leg entanglement as the opponent reacts.

## Common entries

- **Supine open guard:** Frame the near hip and thread the inside leg high as the opponent closes distance.
- **Closed guard:** Open at an angle while maintaining upper-body control and insert the hip wedge.
- **Half guard transition:** Create enough inside space to bring the top leg beneath the far hip.

## Productive next actions

- **Backside 50/50:** Rotate under the far leg while following the opponent's hip.
- **Single-leg X:** Redirect the captured leg into a straight-ashi sweeping position.
- **Kneebar line:** Control the far knee and extend into a ruleset-appropriate leg configuration.

## Defensive priorities

- **Control the top knee:** Prevent the high inside frame from wedging beneath the hip.
- **Square the hips:** Turn to face the guard player's legs before the far leg is isolated.
- **Retreat with posture:** Increase distance while clearing grips rather than twisting the trapped knee.

## Rules and safety

Leg-lock legality changes substantially by age, belt, division, and ruleset. Reaping and the finishing mechanic may be regulated separately. Confirm the current organizer rules before competing.
